Jonathan 30th April 2017

I can remember Grand in a series of images from our time with him. I remember before he became ill when he would stand outside our old house in Brentwood, on the decking smoking. I remember the week I turned four when he took us all on holiday to Lanzarote for his 60th birthday, and I went swimming while he and Granny were by the pool talking. I remember we built a marble run with him which was huge and so much fun. We went to Diggerland for my birthday and he was the only one of us who could lift a wooden duck out of a pond with an excavator and we all broke into spontaneous applause when he did. I also have lots of letters from Grand which would always begin "Hola Jonathan!" and would often come with newspaper article or picture of a digger. I used to play in his garden with a New York taxi car which Auntie Gem gave me. Last time we went to see him we played highway men with him when we all went out for a walk, and were shouting 'stand and deliver' to him and everyone, and they would give us pretend money and we would run off! I remember the power in his hands, and his sayings like "that's a good tool you've got there". I will miss the nice times we all had together - at Christmas, going for walks with him, and all the fun things we did when he was around. Jonathan X
